VLC Media Player is a long-time open-source favorite, and the latest version is also the first to be out of beta development. It's not the only option for free video playback, but it's one of the best, and the feature updates in version 1 make it well worth the upgrade.

Users can now get frame-by-frame advancement, granular speed controls allowing for on-the-fly slower or faster playback, and live recording of streaming video. The toolbars are fully customizable, so you can have only the buttons you need in the interface, there's AirTunes streaming, and there's better integration in Gtk environments. Along with the improvements, VLC continues to offer robust support for a wide range of video and audio formats, including OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, HD codecs like AES3, Raw Dirac, and even support for playing back zipped files. The default interface is still a stripped down player that belies VLC's functionality and features. Skinning can fix that quickly, but behavior can still be a bit unpredictable depending on the quality of the skin. VLC's open-source foundation and community ensures that it evolves quickly and often, with new features and fixes released frequently. Desktop iCalendar Lite offers users a way to keep their calendar at the forefront of their computer. With a simple interface and few problems, this is a great way for users to stay on top of the day's events.

This free program lays itself out on the upper right corner of your desktop. A month-view calendar appears, with the current day highlighted, and below it is a list of reminders for the day and a to-do list. All are dark and hide well on the computer desktop with text that is either orange or white. In addition, the entire image can be altered by accessing the Options menu in the desktop tray icon. From there, users can choose several skin color options as well as the opacity. Entering reminders and to-dos is very simple, thanks to their intuitive nature. Users are taken to a screen that allows for a title, date, and notes to be entered. The reminder allows you to set an alarm, while the to-do can be adjusted with status and priority.
While we wondered why the to-do and reminder options weren't combined into one excellent package instead of two fairly redundant ones, we felt this was a great program for users looking for an organizational tool that is much simpler than popular in-depth calendaring software. We recommend this program for users seeking a simple calendar.

You could run all those chat clients at once, or you could use Gaim, now renamed Pidgin. Like Trillian, Fire, and other third-party IM clients, this open-source messaging application lets you access multiple IM networks from one window, including Google Talk and

MySpaceIM as well as lesser-known protocols such as Jabber and Gadu-Gadu.
Pidgin's biggest change is the redesigned interface. The Buddy List can be viewed in Basic or Advanced mode, and the most important features, including the Plug-in List, have been graduated from the Preferences window into their own panes. Twenty-two plug-ins come prepackaged as Pidgin repositions itself as a highly extensible chat client.
The IM features are unimpeachable: smileys (you can find tons of emoticons on the developer's site), file transfers, and multiperson chats. The Buddy Pounce feature lets you automatically perform certain actions (play a sound, execute a command, open an IM window) when a contact signs on or off. Pidgin also gets lots of intangibles right: logging and time-stamping, for instance, are well-executed and easy to access. However, it lacks IP telephony and video conferencing, and there are still some bugs--most notably in the Help menu. Still, Pidgin remains a highly recommended text-only messaging app.

This diagnostic tool gives you tons of information about every element of your system, such as your CPU, memory (virtual, physical, and swap-file), display drivers, virtual devices, and interrupt-request list. The system information for each category shows up quickly, and most of the benchmarks run smoothly, even when you have other applications running.

We found ourselves wishing for the ability to change attributes and settings, but that is probably beyond the scope of such a program. The standard Explorer-style folder interface makes it easy to access all the information. The arrow keys will only move you up and down the folder list, replacing the information displayed in the main window. The program outputs the system report as an HTML file that mimics the look of the program.
During testing, running a system report took longer than we expected, especially considering how quickly the information shows up in the main program. Otherwise, performance is excellent. Though the program is free, you must register your copy after 11 days and, for some bizarre reason, webmail users like those on Gmail and Yahoo Mail won't be able to receive the registration codes. Gearheads will appreciate the wealth of system information Fresh Diagnose provides, but the webmail issue is a glaring problem.

Focus Photoeditor emphasizes digital photography but does just about everything other graphics packages can do, with a few twists of its own. It has automatic features for quick photo fixes, but it's also easy to use it to draw, paint, and create custom graphics. It includes an advanced image browser and a Web album wizard, too.

Focus Photoeditor's menu bar features clearly labeled functions that are logically and intuitively grouped, which makes them easy to find and understand. There's the usual File, Edit, and Help menus, but most controls are labeled descriptively, such as Color, Noise/Sharpness, Exposure, and Tasks. The layout is typical of full-featured photo editors, with tabs, layers, icon-based toolbars, and sliders. The similarity is more than skin deep, since Photoeditor is compatible with many Adobe Photoshop features, including its Filters Host Application. One of Photoeditor's differences we like is the Layers function's separate tabs for image and text layers. We tried the selection, color, and drawing tools with both a mouse and a Wacom pen, both of which gave excellent control, though pen compatibility isn't perfect; for instance, hovering over a tool with the pen doesn't bring up the tool's label, which it does with the mouse.
Focus Photoeditor is shareware that is free to try for 30 days, though the trial version puts a watermark on images. It's listed as working in Windows versions 95 to Vista, but we tested it in Windows 7 and it worked fine. It's a highly capable and intuitive photo editor, and we recommend it.

In our duties reviewing software for Download.com we install and uninstall a lot of programs. As we're sure you can imagine, this creates a bit of a mess on our PC. Many programs leave files behind when they're uninstalled, and since we're constantly downloading and deleting things, we end up with a lot of invalid shortcuts, broken registry entries, etc. For this very reason, we were excited about trying WinUtilities Free Edition, a suite of tools designed to free up disk space and improve system
performance. We were quite pleased with the program's results.
Some of what WinUtilities does--disk defragmenting and cleanup, for example--can be accomplished using the System Tools that come with Windows. But we liked the way the program combined these and other functions into one clean, intuitive interface, making all of the most useful Windows maintenance utilities easy to access. The program contains a full complement of features to help you manage your computer's performance and security, including a file shredder, duplicate file finder, task scheduler, and much more. The program's One-Click Maintenance feature allows users to run a variety of customizable buttons with the click of a single button. The program's built-in Help file is well written and thorough. Overall, we were quite impressed with WinUtilities, and we think it's a great tool for keeping your system in good shape and free of performance-hindering junk.
WinUtilities Free Edition is free. The program installs and uninstalls without issues. We highly recommend this program to all users.

Flash video on sites like YouTube is great, but what's even better is saving those videos to your computer to be viewed whenever you want. Save2pc Pro is an easy-to-use program that lets users save files from Flash video sites in a variety of formats. It's not the best such program we've ever seen, but overall, it works fine.

The program's interface is simple and intuitive. Users paste the URL of the desired video into a text box, choose a format and destination folder, and click Download. The program downloads the video and saves it in the proper format and locations. Users can choose from among 11 formats, including formats for portable devices and audio-only. Save2pc comes in four different editions, and this one, the Pro edition, gives users access to downloads from the vast majority of popular Flash videos sites, including YouTube, Google Video, DailyMotion, and more. Only the Ultimate version gives users access to more sites. There's really nothing about Save2pc Pro that particularly impressed us--the program doesn't even have a Help file--but it doesn't have any major drawbacks, either. It does the basics, does them well, and that's about all you can expect from it. If you're looking for a basic video downloader that's functional but doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, Save2pc Pro is a good choice.
Save2pc Pro is free to try, but the trial version only downloads the first half of each video. The program installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.

Dictionary .NET is a small program that uses Google's dictionary and translation services. It's not very intuitive, but once you get it figured out, it's a handy tool to have around.
The program's interface is mysterious, with an empty space where you're supposed to enter your search term, and a larger empty box where we figured the search results would appear. We tried searching for some words in English, and English definitions came back. That was all well and good,
but we thought that the point of the program was to translate between languages, not just give us English definitions. We clicked around a bit, starting with the question mark on the interface, which we assumed would lead us to the Help file. But there was no Help file. The Options menu did contain a long list of languages with check boxes next to them, but we weren't sure what that meant in the context of the program. Finally, quite by accident, we stumbled upon the answer; a well-disguised button on the interface that opens a list of languages between which users can translate. We tried several languages and were able to easily translate back and forth. Users should note that the program really is a dictionary and not a translator; you won't be able to translate blocks of texts with it. But as a dictionary it works fine, once you figure it out.
Dictionary .NET is free. It comes as a ZIP file and doesn't require installation. We recommend this program to all users.

Like many people, we're big fans of Google Calendar; it's easy to use, well-organized, and made for sharing with others. But we don't necessarily love the fact that we have to open a new browser tab every time we want to look at it. Enter Desktop iCalendar. This sleek program lets users view Google Calendar content right on their desktop.

The program's interface is modular, with boxes for weather, a calendar, a to-do list, and a list of events that displays information for whatever day is selected on the calendar. Each of these boxes can be moved around on the desktop or disabled, and users can choose from nine different skins to customize the program's appearance. We found it easy to connect to our Google account and sync our various Google calendars with the program; not only did Desktop iCalendar quickly import events that were already on our various Google calendars, it also exported events that we added within the application. We do wish that the program's to-do list was able to sync with Google Tasks; we'd love a way to have those on our desktop. We also had trouble getting the weather module to work; it would display the weather for some cities, but give error messages for others, even though the cities were included in the program's list of available locations. Desktop iCalendar's Help file could stand to be a little more detailed, but it does cover the basics. Overall, we think this program is a nice choice for users who want to view Google Calendar information on their desktop in an attractive way.

Desktop iCalendar installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.

Tax time is always just around the corner. Software maker 1099 Pro's Enterprise Edition provides a smooth way to fill out practically any U.S. tax form and print it off. With a simple layout and impressive choices, this is a great program for frequent tax filers.

Large command buttons and intuitive flow characterize the interface. Navigation is smooth and easy, with no need to consult the Help file. A surprise was that the program didn't just offer the popular 1099 tax form. A drop-down menu offers seven different tax forms, though the program lived up to its name by providing 14 different versions of form 1099. Each form was easy to fill out. A digital version of the form appears on screen, a familiar process much like other online forms and documents we've filled out before. When you're finished, 1099 Pro provides a printer-ready version, though the trial version leaves a logo watermark. The program's only really special feature was an option for filing online, but you have to buy it to use it, and the IRS has other online filing options you can explore. Overall, a familiar feel and plentiful choices make it a great tool for employers who regularly fill out tax forms.

The free version applies a watermark to all documents. It installs desktop icons without permission and leaves folders behind after it's uninstalled. We recommend 1099 Pro Enterprise Edition because of its ease of use and options. It's free to try but $499 to buy, but it may be tax deductible.

W2 Pro Professional Edition promises to simplify the complicated task of managing employee tax paperwork. With a helpful Wizard and surprising extras, it does just that.

We instantly loved the interface's excellent setup Wizard, which provides definitions for complex questions and makes the entire process of managing W-2 forms easy enough for users with no

accounting experience. You can set up your company's information in a matter of minutes by filling in a few fields. Adding employees to your roster and filling in their information is just as easy, especially since a virtual W-2 form lets you fill in the blanks like a hard-copy document. Printing off the paperwork is a cinch. We especially appreciated the ability to change an employee's filing status with ease. While we were happy with W2 Pro's functionality and simplicity, we were just as impressed by its added features. It includes about a dozen other tax forms, which were just as easy as the W2s to fill out and print. A Wizard walks you through the online filing process, which removes all need for paper copies. At every step we felt comfortable organizing these tax forms and were constantly impressed with its features. We can see users of all skill levels making good use of this program.

The free trial version of W2 Pro Professional Edition has some limitations, such as leaving a watermark on forms. It installs desktop icons without permission and leaves folders behind after uninstalling. Its helpful Wizard and excellent extras earn our recommendation.

TopSales Basic lets you manage of all your company's important information from one place. It has many features businesses will find useful. There's a contacts database, a calendar, and a to-do list function. You can also generate invoices and manage your company's bank account with TopSales Basic. It will generate mailing lists and all manner of reports such as Balance Sheets, Sales Analysis, Inventory Control, and other accounting, customer, and product-based data reports.

TopSales Basic's interface is basic, befitting the name, but it gets the job done. The menus are easy to navigate. You can input data from QuickBooks and export data as Excel files, text files, or VCards. Overall, we were impressed with TopSales Basic's features, but it was not without glitches. Presumably you can print files and reports. Under the File menu there is an option for "Printer Setup," but when we clicked on it, nothing happened. There is a Help tab that apparently links to a Web page, but when we clicked on it, an error message said we weren't connected to the Internet. However, there was nothing wrong with our connection, and we were able to access other Web pages with no problems.

This is a 30-day trial version of the software. It installs with no problems, but when we uninstalled it, a 25KB folder was left in our Program Files. Issues with the online Help feature aside, this is an easy-to-use program with a lot of built-in functions that would suit the needs of a small business.

Digital watermarks can help secure critical documents, whether they're business documents, creative property, or personal records. A-PDF Watermark adds digital watermarks to PDF files, singly or in batches. Watermarks can be logos, text, a date/time stamp, page number, image, and more. The program can also label the file's status, stamp files, and enable watermark manipulation within PDFs

. It can even import and export watermarks and print without saving, two enterprise-class features.

A-PDF Watermark's interface is typical of recent Windows apps, a clean, efficient, familiar setup that, together with PDF-based Help file and demos, makes this program easy to learn. There are three ways to add watermarks from A-PDF: The main interface, automatically via the watched folders feature, and from the Command Prompt. We browsed to a PDF, selected the date/time stamp watermark, and clicked Append Watermarks to PDFs. The program instantly responded with a small "done" pop-up. There are controls for associating watermarks with an email client, printer, or FTP, too. The Hot Directory Mode is especially intriguing: It's a simple dialog that sets the program to add a watermark to any files in a specified directory. Creating a new watermark is just as easy, and actually fun, too, thanks to a feature-filled dialog with a preview pane. We whipped up a properly sized image watermark from a random JPEG, saved it, and applied it to a PDF in mere seconds.

It's difficult to imagine anything related to PDF watermarks that A-PDF Watermark can't handle. It's fast, easy to use, flexible, and effective, and highly recommended.

This application produces sounds at various pitches, but many of its features are disabled in the trial version. Rife Generator's no-frills interface lets the user choose either a constant or modulated tone and set the sound's frequency. It offers triangular, sine, and square waveforms that create a different sound pattern and pitch. You can adjust the bandwidth, sound quality, and other settings to create the best output for your computer. Options to create a pulsed signal, save tones, and run tone scripts aren't available in the trial version. Though this application is touted as a Rife device, it doesn't include information on what the various sounds are intended to achieve. The program does indeed produce a wide range of tones and can be used by anyone, but its efficacy as a mechanism to kill unwanted cells in the body is more difficult to gauge.

RaceRender Video Processor is a program that can create and edit videos. For freeware, it has a great deal of functionality, despite its plainness.

The design of this program's interface is very basic, and its layout is fairly easy to navigate. The Help manual is extensive and covers pretty much any topic you need to know. A good Help manual is much appreciated since RaceRender is a complicated program, especially for users with little video editing

experience. We were able to import a video file into the program with no trouble, and we discovered a few useful features, too. For example, the Snapshot feature takes a shot of a frame of video and saves it as a BMP file. RaceRender's description says that you can create videos with picture-in-picture overlays, split screens, camera switching, transparencies, and other effects, and also mix multiple concurrent video and audio sources. Without a thorough study of the user manual, we could only accomplish the basic task of importing video into the program. The editing features are extensive and really require some study of the instructions to fully grasp how to use RaceRender to create and edit videos.

This is a free application. Basic users and those new to video will have a big learning curve using it, but those with video-editing experience will probably be able to get up and running with RaceRender in no time.
